[That's 18 ft/lbs more torque 3700 rpm sooner than a Mazda RX-8]
Volkswagen sold no TDIs in the US for the 2007 model year because of a paradox. In 2007, new emissions regulations for diesels went into effect in the US. While VW has had TDI technology available in Europe for several years that would meet these new regulations, the technology requires Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel which wasn't available in the US until the middle of 2007.
Volkswagen has promised a new TDI for 2008 (though probably only in the Jetta at first) which will meet the new US emissions regulations. Rumors so far say it will be a 2.0L pushing 140 HP and 240 ft-lbs.
