Power mirror control changed from buttons to joystick
The much awaited sunroof appeared very late in the model year
The much more awaited 1.8 Liter Turbo appeared very late in the model year
Clock moved from roof to rear view mirror to accommodate the sunroof
Bugs without a sunroof have a sunglass holder in place of the sunroof controls.
Temperature display added to rear view mirror
Key-less entry changed from a separate “lollipop” remote to integrated “switchblade” key and remote
Front hood prop rod replaced with a gas filled strut
Round tweeter speaker grilles in the A-pillars replaced with triangular grilles during mid-cycle previous year, as with alloy spare
Anti-lock Brakes changed from optional to standard equipment
The lock cylinder was removed from the passenger side exterior door handle
A sunglass holder was installed above the driver's door
A grab handle was installed above the passenger door
Interior lights were added above the rear seats

1999 was the first year for the New Beetle in Europe. Euro-spec Beetles had a few changes of their own.
